Volume Migration

Seamlessly Transfer Storage Ownership between Recorders

Overview

In Milestone XProtect, the media stack consists of two layers — compute, provided by the Recording Service, and storage, organized into volumes. Operational needs such as load redistribution or hardware scaling sometimes require storage to be reassigned between Recorder services. However, in XProtect, each Recording Service exclusively owns its storage volumes. Attempting to transfer ownership of a volume to another Recorder without a controlled process results in catastrophic data loss.

Volume Migration is an XPort workflow that safely transfers ownership of one or more storage volumes from one Recorder service to another, within the same Management Server. The destination Recorder instantly assumes control of all recordings and archives on those volumes — as well as their active devices — while preserving complete media database integrity and ensuring minimal downtime.
