Associate a Map with an RMF Alarm

Overview

This instruction is directed toward system administrators, security operators, and IT personnel who need to connect maps with RMF alarms in Milestone XProtect. Associating maps helps represent the location of the camera that triggered the alarm.

RMF Alarm with map

Use this Guide if You Want To

  • Associate a map with an existing RMF alarm

  • Associate a map with a new RMF alarm

Note: Map association is not supported in Federated, and Independent Redundancy types. At this time, it is only supported for a Single Site architecture.

A Workaround

Milestone’s SDK currently does not support directly linking maps to alarms. Consequently, when alarms are triggered via SDK-based integrations (such as RMF), there is no built-in method to include map data.

Since RMF uses SDK-based methods to ensure high availability of alarms, users seeking map visualization must apply a workaround. The following steps provide a practical solution to associate maps with RMF alarms.

To enable map association, we use a dummy native alarm that is pre-configured with the desired map. When an RMF alarm is triggered, this dummy alarm is also activated, automatically launching the associated map in the Smart Client.

Steps to Implement the Workaround

The steps below must be repeated for each RMF alarm that requires a map to be associated with it.

A. Create an Analytics Event

  1. In the Management Client, navigate to Rules and Events, and then select Analytics Events.

  2. Click Add New.

  3. Provide a unique name for the event (avoid duplicates).

  4. Click Save.

B. Configure a Dummy Native Alarm

  1. Navigate to Alarms > Alarm Definitions.

  2. Click Add New.

  3. Provide a name for the alarm.

  4. Under the Trigger section:

    1. Select Analytics Event as the triggering event.

    2. Choose the event created in Step 1.

  5. Select any source camera (the camera selected is irrelevant, as this is a dummy alarm).

  6. Choose the map that should be associated with this dummy alarm.

  7. Click Save.

Edit RMF Alarms already configured

  1. Navigate to Site Navigation > MIP Plugins.

  2. Expand RMF and select Alarms.

  3. Choose the RMF alarm that you want to link with a map.

  4. From the available options, select Associate Map.

D. View Alarm with Associated Map in the Smart Client

  1. Open the Smart Client application.

  2. Go to the Alarm Manager tab.

  3. Select the RMF alarm from the list.

  4. If the alarm is mapped, the configured map and associated video will open automatically.

Conclusion

This guide provides a reliable workaround for linking maps with RMF alarms in Milestone XProtect. While direct map association is not supported due to SDK limitations, this method ensures that alarms triggered via RMF can still visually represent the event’s location, thereby improving situational awareness and operational efficiency.
